Details

The 2009 CoSMoS workshop will be held, co-located with ICARIS 2009, in York, UK, on 13th August 2009.

The plenary speaker at the workshop will be Professor Irun Cohen. The title of his talk is “The Evolution of Complexity”.

Abstract:

To understand the evolution of complexity, we shall briefly touch upon the concepts of simplicity, complexity, scale, emergence, adaptation and evolution, and define what it is to be a thing, and the essential difference between classes of things, including fundamental physical things (such as atoms and molecules), biological things (such as organisms and species), and immaterial things (such as economies, minds and the Internet).  I shall discuss what it means for one thing to evolve into another thing, and how a simple thing evolves into a complex thing.  I  shall define information and its arrangement into landscapes of information, and how landscapes of information support and drive the evolution of complexity.

The call for papers for this workshop is now available.
